Kyoto
Kyoto was capital of Japan for one thousand years until the 19th century. Over the centuries, the presence in the city of the Imperial court and major political leaders played a crucial (indeed, catalytic) role in fostering ceramics, silk, tea, dance, cuisine, calligraphy and other cultural traditions. Virtually untouched by aerial bombardment during World War II, Kyoto has a unique array of long-established temples and shrines, as well as an important castle. The city is home to fourteen UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites, 20% of Japan's national treasures, and 15% of the nation's cultural properties.
